Data Storage, Backups & The Purge Button

#Storage#Backups#Data

PlanetMusic doesn’t use cloud servers, so your library lives in your own browser, on your own device. That keeps it private, but it also means backing it up is up to you.

1. Where your data lives

Your data is saved in two separate places in your browser:

  • Text and settings: Your song info, lyrics, timestamps, and app settings live in one place. It’s very fast, but the space is limited.
  • Audio files: When you upload a local MP3 to play a song, it goes into a separate, larger place built for big files. Keeping audio apart from the text is what stops your browser from crashing when you load a massive library.

Because everything is on your device, your library won’t follow you to a new computer on its own. Clearing your browser data will also remove it, so keep a backup.

2. Exporting JSON backups

Backups matter. There’s a Download icon in the top right corner of the navigation bar.

Click it and you get a PlanetMusic_Backup.json file with all of your Vault’s text data (lyrics, timings, settings).

WARNING: The JSON backup does not include your local MP3 files or your Deezer ARL token. If you move to a new computer, you’ll need to re-upload your MP3s and re-enter your ARL.

3. The Purge button

If you ever want to wipe the app from your device completely, go to Settings and click the big red Purge All Local Data button.

It permanently deletes both places: your text data and your uploaded audio files. Then it resets the app. It does automatically download a JSON backup right before deleting, in case you change your mind.

Make a backup you can restore

Use the download control in the top navigation to export the Vault before major edits or browser maintenance. The JSON contains the song library and supported settings; it is not an audio archive. Keep a copy somewhere outside this browser, and test important backups by keeping the downloaded file intact. To move libraries, use the app’s import control in the destination browser.

Purge is intentionally broader than removing one track: it clears stored songs, settings, custom blog posts, and local audio from this browser after confirmation. The app downloads a library/settings backup before the purge, but that backup still excludes audio files and the Deezer ARL. Confirm only when you are ready to clear this browser’s PlanetMusic data.
