Formatting Lyrics & Singer Tags

Formatting your lyrics tells PlanetMusic which artist is singing each phrase, so the preview window can give every singer their own color.

This post covers section headers, text styles, and pasting lyrics from online sources.

1. Section headers with multiple artists

Put up to four artists in square brackets after a colon. Each one gets their own text style:

[Verse: Artist 1, _Artist 2_, **Artist 3**, **_Artist 4_**]

COLON RULE: Only the text after the colon is read as artist names. Anything before the colon is ignored. If there’s no colon, like [Verse 1], the section defaults to the primary track artist.

2. The four text styles

The styles are mapped to artists in real time:

1. Plain Text = Artist 1
2. _Italics_ = Artist 2
3. Bold = Artist 3
4. _Bold-Italics_ = Artist 4

Example

[Verse: Artist 1, _Artist 2_, **Artist 3**, **_Artist 4_**]
Artist 1 sings this plain line, _(Artist 2 sings this italic adlib)_
**Artist 3 sings this bold line**, **_Artist 4 sings this bold-italic line_**

3. Multiline styling and pasting lyrics

You don’t have to format everything from scratch.

  • Pasting from online sources: Lyrics copied from sites like Genius or AZLyrics often come with italics for background vocals or bold text for featured artists. When you paste them into the editor, those styles are mapped to Artist 2, 3, or 4 based on your header.
  • Multiline styling: Formatting works across several lines at once. Wrap five lines in a row in _italics_ or **bold** and that whole block goes to the matching artist.

4. Check the live preview

Keep an eye on the Live Preview Window while you type or paste:

  • Colors: Each of the four text styles gets its own artist theme color right away.
  • Layout: Lines show up with their assigned weights, colors, and split layouts as you go, so you can check who’s singing what before you save.

Keep the names consistent

Treat the section header as the roster for the lines that follow it. Write artist names after the colon and separate multiple names with commas; the four text styles then identify which roster entry is singing. A header without artist names falls back to the track’s primary artist, so add an explicit roster when a duet or group line needs different attribution.

Check the Live Preview after pasting formatted lyrics. Websites can copy rich text inconsistently, and the preview is the quickest way to catch a lost style, misspelled artist name, or ad-lib that was not recognized as a separate part. Consistent names also help the app reuse artist colors and images.
